Message from the desk of the Founder and Executive Director, Evelyn Mungai
Welcome to Evelyn College of Design!
I started this college way back in 1976 as the first design college in East and Central Africa. The vision came from a realisation that there was no design industry in this part of the world – just “tailoring”. This immediately led to seeing the need for creating a world class design school where professionals were developed in this new field and where solid careers were created.
This has been and continues to be our priority today, 39 years after our inception. Our college has continuously evolved, in line with the market for design professionals, and also with trends in Arts and Crafts. Our school brings together all these design disciplines through one unified faculty, working together to develop the next generation of designers.
We are the most comprehensive and collaborative design school in Africa., and Evelyn College of Design plays an important role in changed . We are fortunate to be located in one of the largest and fastest growing economies on the continent, set in a rapidly growing city that has become highly sophisticated in its tastes
Evelyn College of Design offers the Higher National Diploma in Fashion Design, Interior Design and Communication Design, as well as several part-time courses, including in Pattern Drafting and Garment Construction, Interior Design. In addition the College is embarked on forming an exciting series of international partnerships with design colleges in other parts of the world.
As the largest and oldest established professional design school in the region, we graduate future leaders in these various fields of design – young women and men who are not only skilled technically but equipped with a rich understanding of all that it takes to succeed in life, whether as an employee or running their own businesses. So they are all exposed to such aspects as personal financial management, entrepreneurship and personal brand building. Through our extensive partnerships with design firms, not only do our students benefit from internships but the design professionals from these firms visit the college as resource people on our programmes.
The bottom line is that we combine strong theory and formal qualifications with a highly practical approach that has seen our graduates be among the leading designers in Kenya and the region, – and indeed far beyond.
The vision of building the design industry in this part of the world has also led to the creation of African Mystique, the in-house fashion and fabric brand that includes a shop in the college premises. African Mystique collaborates with other designers (including our own students) to produce a premium line of clothing and accessories, and through its outlet provides a platform for alumni to showcase their work.
I and my colleagues look forward to seeing you at the college campus, whether as a student, a visitor or an industry collaborator.
